How to make the Patriotic Chocolate Covered TwinkiesÂ
Instructions:
Start by putting a red, white and blue paper straw into each Twinkie, this will be the handle for everyone to hold when they eat the Patriotic Twinkies.
Then start by melting the chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Be sure to do this in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. You can add a spray of cooking oil or melt the chocolate melts as per instructions on the packet.
Next, dip each Twinkie into the chocolate. Be sure to coat it evenly and let any excess chocolate drip off before moving on to the next step.
Once all of the Twinkies are coated in chocolate, it’s time to add the sprinkles. You can either dip each Twinkie into a bowl of sprinkles or sprinkle them over the top of each one. Be sure to do this while the chocolate is still wet so that the sprinkles will stick.
Let the chocolate covered Twinkies set for about 30 minutes before serving. These patriotic treats are best enjoyed on the Fourth of July, but they will be delicious any time of year!

While the recipe is straightforward, it is always nice to have a few different tips and suggestions to make things easier. So here are some of the recipe notes and tips to help you out:
- Be sure to let the excess chocolate drip off of each Twinkie before adding the sprinkles. Otherwise, your sprinkles will be too clumpy.Â
- If children are helping, make sure they are supervised while helping.Â
- Make sure you store the Patriotic Chocolate Covered Twinkies in an airtight container to ensure maximum freshness.Â
- Patriotic Chocolate Covered Twinkies are best served the same day that they are made. However, if you need to make them ahead of time, they will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week
- Not a fan of Twinkies? You can use any type of cake or cupcake for this recipe. Simply cut them into bite-sized pieces before dipping in chocolate
Variations to try:
Like with many recipes there will always be variations to try. Here are a few suggestions.Â
- You could always make your own Twinkies if you wanted. They are quite easy to make if you have time and this recipe from Food Network is a great option
- Swap out the white candy melts for milk or dark chocolate and add different colored sprinkles like green and gold for St Patrick’s Day or green and red for Christmas. You could also add food coloring to the white chocolate melts and make pink or light blue for a Baby shower.
- Get creative with your sprinkles! Use red, white and blue nonpareils, or try using patriotic themed confetti sprinkles.Â
